Biography

JASON CONG received his B.S. degree in computer science from Peking University in 1985, his M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987 and 1990, respectively. Currently, he is a Chancellor’s Professor at the Computer Science Department of University of California, Los Angeles, the director of Center for Domain-Specific Computing (CDSC), co-director of UCLA/Peking University Joint Research Institute in Science and Engineering, and co-director of the VLSI CAD Laboratory. He served as the chair the UCLA Computer Science Department from 2005 to 2008. Dr. Cong is also a distinguished visiting professor at Peking University and the director of PKU Center for Energy-Efficient Computing and Applications (CECA). Dr. Cong’s research interests include synthesis of VLSI circuits and systems, programmable systems, novel computer architectures, nano-systems, and highly scalable algorithms. He has over 350 publications in these areas, including 7 best paper awards and the 2011 ACM/IEEE A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electric Design Automation. He was elected to an IEEE Fellow in 2000 and ACM Fellow in 2008. He is the recipient of the 2010 IEEE Circuits and System (CAS) Society Technical Achievement Award “For seminal contributions to electronic design automation, especially in FPGA synthesis, VLSI interconnect optimization, and physical design automation.”

Dr. Cong has graduated 30 PhD students. A number of them are now faculty members in major research universities, including Cornell, Georgia Tech., Peking University, Purdue, SUNY Binghamton, UCLA, UIUC, and UT Austin. Four of them were co-founders, together with Dr. Cong, of two startups originated from UCLA – Aplus Design Technologies (acquired by Magma in 2003, now part of Synopsys) and AutoESL Design Technologies (acquired by Xilinx in 2011). Others are in key R&D or management positions in various companies related to the information technologies, such as Bloomberg, Broadcom, Cadence, Google, IBM, Intel, Micron, Synopsys, and Xilinx.

Biography

Dr. Deming Chen obtained his BS in computer science from University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1995, and his MS and PhD in computer science from University of California at Los Angeles in 2001 and 2005 respectively. He worked as a software engineer between 1995-1999 and 2001-2002. He joined the ECE department of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005 and has been a full professor in the same department since 2015. He is a research professor in the Coordinated Science Laboratory and an affiliate professor in the CS department. His current research interests include system-level and high-level synthesis, machine learning algorithms and acceleration, GPU and reconfigurable computing, computational genomics, and hardware security. He has given more than 110 invited talks sharing these research results worldwide.

Dr. Chen is a technical committee member for a series of top conferences and symposia on EDA, FPGA, low-power design, and VLSI systems design. He has also served as General or TPC Chair, Track Chair, Session Chair, Panelist, Panel Organizer, or Moderator for these conferences. He is or has been an associated editor for IEEE TCAD, ACM TODAES, IEEE TVLSI, ACM TRETS, IEEE TCAS-I and TCAS-II, IET Cyber-Physical Systems, JCSC, and JOLPE. He obtained the Achievement Award for Excellent Teamwork from Aplus Design Technologies in 2001, the Arnold O. Beckman Research Award from UIUC in 2007, the NSF CAREER Award in 2008, and nine Best Paper Awards. He is included in the List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent in 2008 and 2017. He received the ACM SIGDA Outstanding New Faculty Award in 2010, and IBM Faculty Award in 2014 and 2015. In 2017 and 2019 respectively, he led a team to win the first place of DAC International System Design Contest. He has given a series of Keynote or Plenary speeches at various conferences. He is the Donald Biggar Willett Faculty Scholar and Abel Bliss Professor of College of Engineering, an IEEE Fellow, an ACM Distinguished Speaker, and the Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Reconfigurable Technology and Systems (TRETS).

Dr. Chen was involved in several startup companies. He implemented his published algorithm on CPLD technology mapping when he was a software engineer in Aplus Design Technologies, Inc. in 2001, and the software was exclusively licensed by Altera and distributed to many customers of Altera worldwide. He is one of the inventors of the xPilot High Level Synthesis package developed at UCLA, which was licensed to AutoESL Design Technologies, Inc. Aplus was acquired by Magma in 2003, and AutoESL was acquired by Xilinx in 2011. He has also served as a consultant for several leading semiconductor companies.

In 2016, he co-founded a startup, Inspirit IoT, Inc., for design, acceleration and deployment of machine learning solutions targeting the IoT industry. He is currently the Chairman of the Board and the Interim CTO of the company. Inspirit IoT recently received an NSF SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Award from the US government.

Biography

Rolf Drechsler (www.rolfdrechsler.de) received the Diploma and Dr. phil. nat. degrees in computer science from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in 1992 and 1995, respectively. He worked at the Institute of Computer Science, Albert-Ludwigs University, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, from 1995 to 2000, and at the Corporate Technology Department, Siemens AG, Munich, Germany, from 2000 to 2001.

Since October 2001, Rolf Drechsler is a Full Professor and Head of the Group of Computer Architecture, Institute of Computer Science, at the University of Bremen, Germany. In 2011, he additionally became the Director of the Cyber-Physical Systems Group at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Bremen. His current research interests include the development and design of data structures and algorithms with a focus on circuit and system design. He is an ACM Distinguished Member and an IEEE Fellow.

From 2008 to 2013 he was the Vice Rector for Research and Young Academics at the University of Bremen. Since 2018 he is the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Rolf Drechsler was a member of Program Committees of numerous conferences including e.g., DAC, ICCAD, DATE, ASP-DAC, FDL, MEMOCODE, and FMCAD. He was Symposiums Chair at ISMVL 1999 and 2014, and the Topic Chair for "Formal Verification" at DATE 2004, DATE 2005, DAC 2010, and DAC 2011 and 2018. He was the General Chair of the IEEE European Test Symposium 2018 and the Program Chair of ICCAD 2020. He received best paper awards at the Haifa Verification Conference (HVC) in 2006, the Forum on specification & Design Languages (FDL) in 2007, 2010 and 2020, the IEEE Symposium on Design and Diagnostics of Electronic Circuits and Systems (DDECS) in 2010, the Euromirco Digital System Design Conference 2020 and the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD) in 2013 and 2018. He received the Berninghausen Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2018.

He is a co-founder of the Graduate School of Embedded Systems and he is the coordinator of the Graduate School "System Design" funded within the German Excellence Initiative. He is a co-founder and the spokesperson of the Data Science Center at the University of Bremen.

Rolf Drechsler served as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, IEEE Transactions on Very Large Scale Integration Systems, Chip, IET Cyber-Physical Systems: Theory & Applications, International Journal on Multiple-Valued Logic and Soft Computing, and ACM Journal on Emerging Technologies in Computing Systems.
