CEDA Fellow Evaluation Committee

The CEDA Fellow Evaluation Committee performs a technical evaluation of the candidates nominated to be evaluated through CEDA. The purpose of this step is to ensure that the technical and professional achievements of a candidate are evaluated by their peers. The basic outcome of CEDA Fellow Committee evaluation is to place candidates into a single rank-order list where each candidate is given a score. These scores are supported by comments worded by the evaluators.

In 2024, CEDA is included in a Cohort Fellow Evaluating Committee within Division I, together with the Nanotechnology Council.
The CEDA Fellow Evaluation Committee does not make decisions for elevation to Fellow grade. Such a decision falls to the IEEE Board of Directors.

Biography

Subhasish Mitra is currently a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA, where he directs the Stanford Robust Systems Group and co-leads the computation focus area of the Stanford SystemX Alliance. He is also a Faculty Member with the Neurosciences Institute, Stanford University. He holds the Carnot Chair of Excellence in Nanosystems at CEA-LETI, Grenoble, France. Before joining the Stanford faculty, he was a Principal Engineer at Intel Corporation, Santa Clara, CA, USA. His current research interests include broadly across robust computing, nanosystems, VLSI design, validation, test, and electronic design automation, and neurosciences. He along with his students and collaborators demonstrated the first carbon nanotube computer and the first 3-D nanosystem with computation immersed in data storage. These demonstrations received widespread recognitions (cover of Nature, Research Highlight to the U.S. Congress by the National Science Foundation, highlight as “important, scientific breakthrough” by the BBC, The Economist, Electronic Engineering Times, IEEE Spectrum, MIT Technology Review, National Public Radio, The New York Times, Scientific American, Time, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and numerous others worldwide). His earlier work on X-Compact test compression has been a key to cost-effective manufacturing and high-quality testing of almost all electronic systems. X-Compact and its derivatives have been implemented in widely-used commercial electronic design automation tools. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and IEEE. He received the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Design Automation/IEEE CEDA A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electronic Design Automation (a test-of-time honor), the Semiconductor Research Corporation's Technical Excellence Award, the Intel Achievement Award (Intel's highest corporate honor), and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from the White House (the highest United States honor for early-career outstanding scientists and engineers). He along with his students published several award-winning papers at major venues, including the ACM/IEEE Design Automation Conference, the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference, the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Computer-Aided Design, the IEEE International Test Conference, the IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design, the IEEE VLSI Test Symposium, and the Symposium on VLSI Technology. He was honored several times by graduating seniors for being important to them during their time at Stanford. He has served on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Information Science and Technology Board as an Invited Member.

Biography

David Z. Pan is a Professor and holder of Silicon Laboratories Endowed Chair at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin. His research interests include bidirectional AI and IC interactions, electronic design automation, design for manufacturing, hardware security, and CAD for analog/mixed-signal ICs and emerging technologies. He has published over 400 refereed journal/conference papers and 8 US patents. He has served in many journal editorial boards and conference committees, including various leadership roles such as ICCAD 2019 General Chair, ASP-DAC 2017 TPC Chair, and ISPD 2008 General Chair. He has received many awards, including SRC Technical Excellence Award, 19 Best Paper Awards (ISPD 2020, ASP-DAC 2020, DAC 2019, GLSVLSI 2018, VLSI Integration 2018, HOST 2017, SPIE 2016, ISPD 2014, ICCAD 2013, ASP-DAC 2012, ISPD 2011, IBM Research 2010 Pat Goldberg Memorial Best Paper Award in CS/EE/Math, ASP-DAC 2010, DATE 2009, ICICDT 2009, SRC Techcon in 1998, 2007, 2012 and 2015), DAC Top 10 Author Award in Fifth Decade, ASP-DAC Frequently Cited Author Award, Communications of ACM Research Highlights, ACM/SIGDA Outstanding New Faculty Award, NSF CAREER Award, IBM Faculty Award (4 times), and many international CAD contest awards. He has graduated 35 Ph.D. students who have won many awards, including First Place of ACM Student Research Competition Grand Finals (twice, in 2018 and 2021), ACM/SIGDA Student Research Competition Gold Medal (x3), ACM Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation in EDA Award (x2), and EDAA Outstanding Dissertation Award (x2). He is a Fellow of IEEE and SPIE.

Biography

Prof. Jörg Henkel is with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, where he is directing the Chair for Em-bedded Systems CES. Before, he was a Senior Research Staff Member at NEC Laboratories in Princeton, NJ. He received his PhD from Braunschweig University with "Summa cum Laude". Prof. Henkel has/is organizing various embedded systems and low power ACM/IEEE conferences/symposia as General Chair and Program Chair and was a Guest Editor on these topics in various Journals like the IEEE Computer Magazine. He was Program Chair of CODES'01, RSP'02, ISLPED’06, SIPS'08, CASES'09, Estimedia'11, VLSI Design'12, ICCAD’12, PATMOS’13, NOCS’14, DAC’20, and served as General Chair for CODES'02, ISLPED’09, Estimedia’12, ICCAD’13, ESWeek'16 and DAC'23. He is/has been a steering committee member of major conferences in the embedded systems field like at DAC, ICCAD, ESWeek, ISLPED, Codes+ISSS, CASES and is/has been an editorial board member of various journals like the IEEE TVLSI, IEEE TCAD, IEEE TMSCS, ACM TCPS, JOLPE etc. In recent years, Prof. Henkel has given around ten keynotes at various international conferences primarily with focus on embedded systems dependa-bility. He has given full/half-day tutorials at leading conferences like DAC, ICCAD, DATE etc. Prof. Henkel received the 2008 DATE Best Paper Award, the 2009 IEEE/ACM William J. Mc Calla ICCAD Best Paper Award, the Codes+ISSS 2015, 2014, and 2011 Best Paper Awards, and the MaXentric Technologies AHS 2011 Best Paper Award as well as the DATE 2013 Best IP Award and the DAC 2014 Designer Track Best Poster Award. He is the Chairman of the IEEE Computer Society, Germany Section, and was the Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems (ACM TECS) for two consecutive terms. He was also the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Design&Test Magazine from January 2016 to Dec. 2021. He was the Vice Chair and Conference Chair of ACM SIGDA and is currently the Vice President Publications of IEEE CEDA. Since 2023 he has been the Steering Committee Chair of ACM/IEEE ESWeek. He is an initiator and the coordinator of the German Research Foundation's (DFG) program on 'Dependable Embedded Systems' (SPP 1500). He was the site coordinator (Karlsruhe site) of the Three-University Collaborative Research Center on "Invasive Computing" (DFG TR89). He holds ten US patents and is a Fellow of the IEEE and ACM.

Biography

Dr. Deming Chen obtained his BS in computer science from University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1995, and his MS and PhD in computer science from University of California at Los Angeles in 2001 and 2005 respectively. He worked as a software engineer between 1995-1999 and 2001-2002. He joined the ECE department of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005 and has been a full professor in the same department since 2015. He is a research professor in the Coordinated Science Laboratory and an affiliate professor in the CS department. His current research interests include system-level and high-level synthesis, machine learning algorithms and acceleration, GPU and reconfigurable computing, computational genomics, and hardware security. He has given more than 110 invited talks sharing these research results worldwide.

Dr. Chen is a technical committee member for a series of top conferences and symposia on EDA, FPGA, low-power design, and VLSI systems design. He has also served as General or TPC Chair, Track Chair, Session Chair, Panelist, Panel Organizer, or Moderator for these conferences. He is or has been an associated editor for IEEE TCAD, ACM TODAES, IEEE TVLSI, ACM TRETS, IEEE TCAS-I and TCAS-II, IET Cyber-Physical Systems, JCSC, and JOLPE. He obtained the Achievement Award for Excellent Teamwork from Aplus Design Technologies in 2001, the Arnold O. Beckman Research Award from UIUC in 2007, the NSF CAREER Award in 2008, and nine Best Paper Awards. He is included in the List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent in 2008 and 2017. He received the ACM SIGDA Outstanding New Faculty Award in 2010, and IBM Faculty Award in 2014 and 2015. In 2017 and 2019 respectively, he led a team to win the first place of DAC International System Design Contest. He has given a series of Keynote or Plenary speeches at various conferences. He is the Donald Biggar Willett Faculty Scholar and Abel Bliss Professor of College of Engineering, an IEEE Fellow, an ACM Distinguished Speaker, and the Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Reconfigurable Technology and Systems (TRETS).

Dr. Chen was involved in several startup companies. He implemented his published algorithm on CPLD technology mapping when he was a software engineer in Aplus Design Technologies, Inc. in 2001, and the software was exclusively licensed by Altera and distributed to many customers of Altera worldwide. He is one of the inventors of the xPilot High Level Synthesis package developed at UCLA, which was licensed to AutoESL Design Technologies, Inc. Aplus was acquired by Magma in 2003, and AutoESL was acquired by Xilinx in 2011. He has also served as a consultant for several leading semiconductor companies.

In 2016, he co-founded a startup, Inspirit IoT, Inc., for design, acceleration and deployment of machine learning solutions targeting the IoT industry. He is currently the Chairman of the Board and the Interim CTO of the company. Inspirit IoT recently received an NSF SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Award from the US government.
