Guilherme Paim is an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, and an Integrated Researcher at INESC-ID, Portugal. He received his Ph.D. degree (summa cum laude) in Microelectronics from UFRGS, Brazil, in 2021, including a research stay at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany (2019–2020). He received the 2022 Best Ph.D. Thesis Award from the Brazilian Microelectronics Society (SBMicro) and an Honorable Mention Award from CAPES foundation. He held postdoctoral positions at UFRGS, INESC-ID, and MICAS Labs, KU Leuven, in collaboration with imec R&D (Belgium). Prof. Paim has contributed to EU research projects, including the EU CONVOLVE (Horizon Europe) and ERC BINGO projects, as well as transatlantic projects (EU-Brazil) like FCT/CAPES and PROBRAL/CAPES. He has also served as a technical consultant for microelectronics and AI initiatives funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), and co-authored the Brazilian National AI Plan. He has authored or co-authored around 100 publications, served on the Technical Program Committees of leading conferences (ESSERC, DAC, ASP-DAC, DATE, and MLCAD), and is the Tutorial Chair for IEEE LASCAS 2025. His research focuses on AI system-on-chip (SoC) and chiplet-based architectures, computer architecture design automation, and next-generation AI computing platforms that combine specialized accelerators, advanced memory hierarchies, and efficient data movement and interconnects. Most recently, he led a tapeout of a 9 mm² heterogeneous AI SoC for neuro-symbolic intelligence in TSMC 16nm technology, supervising the complete end-to-end design flow, from the software stack, computer architecture, RTL development up to the physical implementation.
